WhatsApp Plus rolling out with premium features for personalised messaging

In a surprising move, it appears that WhatsApp is moving closer to a subscription model. Apparently, the WhatsApp team is working on a new premium tier called WhatsApp Plus, which is now being tested with a limited number of users.

Focus on Customisation and Personalisation

The new subscription is designed to enhance how the app looks and feels, rather than changing its core functionality. According to reports, WhatsApp Plus introduces a range of customisation tools, including new app themes, accent colours, and up to 14 alternative app icons. Subscribers will also gain access to exclusive sticker packs and unique ringtones, offering more ways to personalise conversations.

Beyond visual changes, WhatsApp Plus adds practical upgrades aimed at power users. One of the most notable improvements is the ability to pin up to 20 chats, a significant jump from the current limit of three. The subscription may also allow users to apply settings such as notifications and chat preferences across multiple conversations, making it easier to manage large chat lists.

Premium Features Remain Optional

Importantly, WhatsApp’s core features will remain free. Messaging, voice and video calls, group chats, and end-to-end encryption are not affected by the subscription. WhatsApp Plus is positioned purely as an optional upgrade for users who want additional flexibility and customisation without impacting the standard experience.

The feature is currently being tested on Android, with broader availability expected at a later stage. Pricing is reported to be around €2.49 (~RM11) per month in early tests, though this may change before a wider rollout. But what do you think about this upcoming new addition?
