Today, WhatsApp has launched a new message translation feature aimed at making conversations smoother across languages, without compromising privacy. At the moment, it's not part of the latest WhatsApp update, but it will gradually roll out.
How It Works
If you receive a message in a language you don’t understand, you can simply long-press it and tap “Translate”. You can choose which language to translate from or to, and the translation can also be downloaded for future use. This capability works in one-to-one chats, group conversations, and Channel updates.
For Android users, there’s an extra convenience: the option to automatically translate all incoming messages in a given chat thread. Additionally, WhatsApp emphasises that translations occur locally on your device, meaning the app itself cannot access or read translated messages. This preserves end-to-end encryption.
Initial Language Support and Rollout
The feature is rolling out gradually, starting now. On Android, users will initially have support for six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. On iPhone, support will launch in over 19 languages, with more to follow. That said, WhatsApp has not confirmed when message translations will come to Web, Windows, or Mac apps.
