WhatsApp is rolling out a new Safety Overview feature aimed at preventing messaging scams, especially those targeting users in Southeast Asia.
This update follows Meta’s recent action of banning over 6.8 million scam-related accounts between 1 January and 30 June 2025.
The new Safety Overview will appear when users are added to a group by someone not in their contacts. Before they can view any messages, users will see a warning page displaying the group’s creation date, number of members, and who invited them.
This added layer of transparency allows users to assess the group’s legitimacy before engaging.
What we could expect
WhatsApp’s latest move reflects a clear shift toward stronger scam prevention. In Malaysia, where fake investment schemes and pyramid scams are on the rise, this feature could help reduce exposure to suspicious groups.
By highlighting who invited you and when the group was created, WhatsApp gives users the power to make informed decisions before interacting.
These new protections build upon the earlier Context Card feature, which provided contact background information when receiving messages from unknown numbers. Now, WhatsApp is expanding this approach to group invites and broader messaging behaviour.
Additionally, WhatsApp is testing features that warn users to pause before messaging unfamiliar contacts. It will also show more context when someone reaches out for the first time.
This is true especially if they previously contacted the user on another platform like Instagram or Facebook.
One scam tactic that Meta recently disrupted involved the use of AI-generated messages to lure users into WhatsApp groups. Scammers then pushed victims to other platforms like Telegram and TikTok, where they were encouraged to like content or invest in fake crypto schemes.
