From time to time, older phone models will not receive any software support from WhatsApp. As of June 1, 2025, WhatsApp has officially discontinued support for several older iPhone and Android models, following an update to its minimum operating system requirements.
According to this source, WhatsApp now requires iPhones to run on iOS 15.1 or later and Android devices to operate on Android 5.0 or above. This change affects users with devices that cannot be upgraded to meet these new standards. The update was initially scheduled for May 5 but was postponed to provide users additional time to prepare.
Looking at the list, the affected devices include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X and the Sony Xperia Z. Some reports have mentioned that the iPhone 6s Plus, and the first-generation iPhone SE might also be affected, these models currently run on iOS 15.8.4, and are expected to remain supported for the time being.
WhatsApp stated that the decision to end support for these older devices is part of its routine update cycle, aiming to ensure optimal security and functionality for its users. Devices running outdated software often lack the necessary features and security updates required to support the app's latest capabilities.
We don't think a lot of consumers are using the aforementioned phones above, but iPhones are notoriously known for their longevity, and many older folks still use them. Well, it's time for an upgrade.
