WhatsApp now enable Passkey for Backup Encryption

Encrypting WhatsApp backups just got easier this morning after the app was updated to support Passkey. Messages backed up to the cloud can be locked using the Passkey system in the form of a fingerprint scan, face scan or passcode. So, what should you know about it?

An easier system than the old one

For your information, it's a much easier system than memorising a password or the 64-digit code that WhatsApp previously offered. To use this feature, users simply need to go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup.

According to WhatsApp, this feature will be rolled out to all users in phases in the coming weeks and months. Passkey support has been a long-requested feature by WhatsApp users, as it is integrated on Android and iOS devices.

Moreover, memorising passwords and 64-digit codes was previously cumbersome, and if forgotten, backed-up messages would be permanently inaccessible.
