WhatsApp is currently rolling out a new feature for its group chat that gives administrators the power to delete messages sent by their group participants. The ability will remove the message for everyone in the group, essentially enabling for better moderation in group chats against unwanted messages.

First spotted by WaBetaInfo inside the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.22.1.7 on 30 July 2022, it seems that the new moderation tool has passed its beta phase and now available for some users. As shared by Amanz, some WhatsApp users in Malaysia have already gotten the new feature and it is now gradually being rolled out to all users globally.

The feature itself works similar to the existing delete message feature for your sent messages on WhatsApp, whereby you’d be asked on whether to ‘delete for everyone’. If you’re an admin and has selected the option to delete a message from your group’s participants, WhatsApp will give a pop-up message saying that as an admin, you are deleting the said participant’s message for everyone in the chat and that the participant will see that you’ve deleted their message.

Furthermore, once the message is deleted, the text bubble for that particular message will say that ‘You deleted this message as an admin’. For the rest of the group participants, they will still see a text bubble telling that the message has been deleted.

While the feature is definitely welcomed to fight against spam or offensive messages in group chats, it can admittedly be abused by the group admin. Well, for all you group admins out there, please use this power responsibly okay when you get the update!
