WhatsApp rolls out Private Message Summaries for you to catch up busy chats

Nobody wants to read and catch up on a "million" messages after a long day. This is why WhatsApp is introducing a new Private Message Summaries feature aimed at helping users read a summary of what they have missed in their most active chats.

AI-Powered Message Summaries

With the new update, WhatsApp will now display conversation context directly in your notifications. This includes a brief summary of key messages or mentions, so you can catch up quickly without needing to open the app immediately.

The summaries are generated using on-device AI, ensuring that your messages remain private and secure, in line with WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption standards. No messages are uploaded or stored externally, reinforcing the platform’s commitment to privacy.

On that note, WhatsApp also mentioned that using Private Processing features, such as Message Summaries, is optional and is off by default. So users can choose whether or not to use them and can use Advanced Chat Privacy to select which chats can be shared for AI features.

When Is It Rolling Out?

The update is rolling out globally in the coming weeks. As the feature rolls out, users on supported devices can expect to see smarter, more context-aware notifications that make catching up on conversations easy.

Message Summaries is also rolling out in English first to the US people. As for other languages, WhatsApp has plans to expand on that to other countries later this year.
