Back in early 2022, we already knew that WhatsApp could be working on a new Communities function for the mobile app. Well, Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg and WhatsApp have just confirmed the vision for it and here's what you can expect.

According to Zuckerberg's Facebook post as well as WhatsApp's blogpost, Communities will serve as a space for organizations like schools, local clubs, NGOs, work and many more to communicate securely. People in any certain group can receive updates seamlessly and organize smaller discussion groups within.

Besides that, admins in Communities can take advantage of new tools such as sending announcement messages and controlling which groups can be included. The WhatsApp development team is also planning to add four features for Communities which are:

  • Reactions - where people can use emoji reactions to certain messages without spamming the chat room
  • Admin delete - removing errant or problematic messages
  • File sharing - allowing people to share files of up to 2GB
  • Larger Voice Calls - a new one-tap voice calling for up to 32 people

Zuckerberg said that WhatsApp Communities is now being tested and should roll out in the next few months. This should be a great move for us Malaysians as we tend to use WhatsApp for a lot of group projects and other things that we just mentioned. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
