WhatsApp is set to phase out support for older Android devices later this year, as part of its ongoing effort to maintain performance and introduce newer features. The change will take effect on 8 September 2026, impacting users running outdated versions of the Android operating system.

Android 6 Becomes the New Minimum Requirement

Following the update, WhatsApp will only support devices running Android 6.0 or newer. This means smartphones still on Android 5.0 and 5.1 will no longer be able to access the app once the cutoff date arrives. Currently, the app still supports Android 5.0 and above, but the upcoming shift raises the minimum requirement in line with newer system capabilities and security standards.

For affected users, the impact is straightforward. Once support ends, WhatsApp will stop functioning entirely on unsupported devices, cutting off access to messaging, calls, and updates. Users who are still on older devices are advised to either update their operating system if possible or switch to a newer smartphone to continue using the platform.

To prepare users ahead of the transition, WhatsApp has started displaying in-app notifications warning about the upcoming change. These alerts inform users that their device will soon become incompatible. The company is also recommending users back up their chat history before the deadline to avoid losing important conversations. Backup options include cloud storage or local file transfers.

What This Means for Users

While the number of affected users is expected to be relatively small, the change could still impact regions where older smartphones remain in active use, including parts of Southeast Asia. For most users, the update will go unnoticed. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
