The instant messaging platform WhatsApp recently updated its list of supported operating systems and specifically reminded users of the upcoming system support changes: Starting from May 5, 2025, iPhone users must run iOS 15.1 or above to continue using WhatsApp services.

Currently, WhatsApp supports the following systems:

  • Android 5.0 and above;
  • iOS 12 and above ( but will be upgraded to iOS 15.1 and above from May 5 ).

This means that users who are still using older versions of iOS (such as iOS 12, 13 or 14) will need to update the system as soon as possible, otherwise, they will not be able to use WhatsApp normally. Officials said that the supported platforms will be reviewed every year, and old systems with few devices or that no longer meet security and performance standards will be gradually eliminated.

In addition, WhatsApp emphasized that when registering an account and verifying a phone number, the device must be able to receive text messages or calls, and it does not support devices that rely solely on Wi-Fi to set up new accounts.

If the user's operating system is about to be deactivated, WhatsApp will send a notification in the app in advance and remind the user to upgrade the system multiple times to avoid service interruption.
