The Wikimedia Foundation has suspended a test of displaying summaries above articles using artificial intelligence (AI) that was announced on June 2 after receiving criticism from editors. So, what should you know about it?
Why did this happen?
According to a report by 404 Media. The feature was supposed to be tested for two weeks, and it only appeared on the mobile version.
Moreover, Wikipedia's editorial community has rejected the introduction of this feature because it would harm the site's reputation as a trustworthy source. Like Google AI Overviews, the feature Wikipedia is testing will summarise long articles on the site into shorter, more easily understood paragraphs.
With Google facing controversy over its inaccurate AI Overviews, Wikipedia editors feel the same could happen, leading to readers receiving incorrect information. The editors also stated that while Wikipedia content is long and tedious to read, this should not be seen as a negative, especially for complex information.
Although Wikimedia has stopped testing AI summarisation, they are still interested in continuing to use it to make site content more accessible to readers around the world. The Wikimedia Foundation uses Cohere's Aya model for summarisation and has previously agreed to license the content for AI training purposes and to use AI to translate English articles into other languages.
