As we are nearing October, rumours about the Apple iPhone 15 Pro are spreading like wildfires. Over the years, we saw how iPhone's bezels have gotten significantly smaller. However, Apple is always hungry for more. Rumour suggests the latest iPhone entries could feature a truly “bezel-less” display.
According to a report by The Elec, Apple has requested that LG Display and Samsung Display “develop OLED that removes all iPhone front bezels”. To make this happen, Samsung and LG should focus on upgrading iPhone’s display hardware. That includes thin-film encapsulation and under-panel camera hardware. The report says:
“It is a technology that still needs time to be applied for mass production.”
In contrast to Samsung, Apple is against using curved displays for its flagships. For Samsung, they implement a “magnifying glass effect” around the edge of the phone display to make it appear truly bezel-less. On the other hand, Apple is hesitant about this technology. The report explains:
“Without applying a curved display like this, it is said that to implement the bezel design that Apple wants, it is possible to bend all of the circuits currently in the bezel area under the display. At this time, we need to free up antenna space and solve the interference problem.
Challenges to implementing the bezel-less screen include thin film bag (TFE) and under-panel camera (UPC) technology. Product outer thin film bags should be thinner, and UPCs can be made so that they are not easily distinguished from the rest of the display to expand user immersion.”
While Apple pushes for a smaller bezel for the upcoming 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, they might face production issues. Last week, a report suggested the company could face severe supply shortages due to production issues for the new display technology.
