Wishlist: Could HONOR's upcoming flip phone be the world's first foldable display clamshell for productivity?

As a slew of foldable display clamshell smartphones just got announced (ZTE Libero Flip, nubia Flip 5G, etc.), we have to say that the one we're watching out for the most is the upcoming foldable display clamshell from HONOR (could it be called the HONOR Magic V Flip?). Not only does it have a lot going for it, but it could be the World's first foldable display clamshell for productivity. Read on to find out why it's on our Wishlist.

Portable productivity

It's no secret that small and compact phones are becoming hard to come by, and as such, clamshell foldable flip phones are now the most portable devices around. The upcoming flip phone from HONOR could be great for productivity because HONOR phones are one of the few smartphones to have a working PC-like desktop mode that will work with Google. This is perfect for those who work mostly with their phones.

Sorry folks, this is just a mock-up of the Huawei Pocket S with the triple rear cameras from the HONOR Magic V2

In addition, HONOR phones are generally well known for their good build quality. And with the recent announcement of the HONOR V2, we can expect that the upcoming foldable display flip phone would also be the thinnest and lightest in its class. They've also got the Titanium hinge with no gaps between the screen, so it should be a pretty solid device for work on the go.

A relatively affordable price… hopefully

While the bigger HONOR Magic V2 debuted with an RM6999 price tag, HONOR usually provides more bang for your buck. So, we're hoping the upcoming flip phone will be more affordable. We're guessing on an RM3100 to RM3999 price tag, but it would be great if it's less than RM3000.

Still Camera-centric

Hopefully the HONOR flip phone comes with the same 50MP + 50MP ultra wide + 20MP telephoto triple rear camera setup as the HONOR Magic V2

HONOR has always delivered devices with good cameras and we expect the same from their upcoming HONOR flip phone. Given the 50MP + 50MP ultra-wide + 20MP triple rear camera setup on the Magic V2, we expect the flip phone to go for the same triple rear camera setup. On the front, we expect at least a 16MP front camera.

Other expected tech specs may include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset with 8GB / 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The screen will likely be a 6.9-inch FHD+ foldable AMOLED display, but we're not that hopeful for a bigger battery than 3000 or 3700 mAh despite rumours of there being a 4500 mAh battery. It should still come with fast charging, but like the Magic V2, we hope that the HONOR flip phone will also have a rectangular cover display.

HONOR could also go for an alternative approach by repurposing or rebadging existing frames and chassis like the Huawei Pocket S. This would definitely be faster and cheaper but would clash somewhat in terms of the existing HONOR Magic design language. HONOR have been trying to avoid this for their previous devices to distance the company from Huawei so we don't think this would happen just to save time and resources.

Other Contenders

Given the lack of PC-like desktop modes for other foldable display flip phones, we don't really see much competition unless Samsung suddenly decides to activate Samsung DeX for their latest Samsung Galaxy Z Flip smartphones. This could be for the current Galaxy Z Flip5 or the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip6. But they haven't for the past 5 iterations, so we're not that hopeful.

So, what do you think? Are you also looking forward to HONOR's upcoming foldable display clamshell flip phone? How much do you think it will be priced? Fortunately, we won't have to wait long, as it is expected to come in 2024, but we still don't have any specific Malaysia release dates just yet.
