Last year, we reported that the Works Ministry is planning to introduce a non-stop toll collection system known as Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) by 2025. Now, despite a change of federal government and another Minister at the helm, the plan would be continued and negotiations with relevant parties would be expedited.

Current Works Minister, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi recently held an engagement session with all 32 local tolled highway concessionaires and relevant stakeholders to get their feedback on the plan. Taking to Twitter, Alexander revealed that all industry players are very receptive to MLFF with several matters regarding the system to be refined to ensure the best service to consumers.

As reported by Bernama, Alexander further revealed that negotiations on MLFF between his ministry, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) and related concessionaires are being expedited. Moreover, a pilot project to enable payments through various digital payment providers as opposed to a single provider would also be conducted as soon as possible to study the implications before the new system could be finalised.

Alexander stressed that the multi-mode payment system was an alternative presented by the ministry pending the implementation of MLFF. Negotiations are being expedited because the Works Ministry is aiming to have MLFF implemented before the 2025 target period.
