By now, you should know about the Xiaomi 17 Pro lineup's secondary Rear-Screen. It is indeed an innovative way of making use of the big plateau, but we also wondered if this was going to be a one-time thing. Well, Xiaomi Group President Lu Weibing has confirmed that Xiaomi’s next-generation flagship smartphones will continue to feature a secondary rear display, with plans to significantly expand research and development in this area.
A Signature Innovation Ready to Evolve
The revelation came during a livestream event on 16 October, where Lu reassured fans and investors that the company’s “Rear-Screen” concept will evolve into a defining feature of its future flagship devices.
The “Rear-Screen” concept first appeared on the Xiaomi 17 Series and quickly became a hit with users thanks to its unique blend of style and functionality. The screen is crafted using Dragon Glass, identical to that used for the primary display, and achieves a smooth, 2.1-inch AMOLED display with an LTPO adaptive refresh rate.
R&D Boost After Early Success
The rear display played a major role in making the Xiaomi 17 series a runaway success. During the first five minutes of sales alone, the series broke 2025’s domestic smartphone full-price segment first-day sales record. Overall unit sales grew by 20% year-on-year, but the Pro models surged by 300%, showing just how powerful the feature has become among fans.
Lu revealed that Xiaomi has already invested over RMB 1 billion into developing the rear screen — a sum that will grow in preparation for future models.
Expanding Capabilities: From Notifications to Translation
Currently, the rear screen on the Xiaomi 17 Pro already supports a wide range of features, including:
- Instant notification previews and missed call alerts
- Selfie previewing with the main camera
- Custom wallpaper and time-based displays
- Displaying QR codes for payment, movie tickets, and travel itineraries
- Livelines with AI-based wallpapers and animated backgrounds
The roadmap for future updates is even more ambitious. Late October will bring new features such as real-time translation on the rear screen, and Xiaomi plans to roll out monthly updates with regular new functions, making the rear display a continuously evolving feature rather than a static gimmick.
The Future of Input-less Interaction
By embracing the rear display as an evolving platform, Lu hinted that their long-term goal is for this secondary panel to become the standard second interface for a broader range of functions — from messaging and time management to intelligent IoT control — without ever unlocking the phone.
