As you may know, most smartphones either pack a Qualcomm or MediaTek chipset. Less reliance on both chip makers could help smartphone brands reduce production costs, which is what Samsung and Huawei have been doing. Now, Xiaomi could be the next company to produce in-house chipsets.
According to Bloomberg (via GSMArena), Xiaomi has begun developing its own mobile chipset. Mass production for the still unnamed chipset will start sometime in 2025, with the first device powered by it also expected to be released next year. Sources say Xiaomi plans to invest 30 billion yuan (~RM18.4 billion) in R&D next year. While the exact investment sum for chipset development hasn't been confirmed, it's likely to be a significant amount.
The Qualcomm-MediaTek duopoly has been around for years, so it's always good to see companies working to break their reliance on these companies. Mind you, whether Xiaomi can succeed is another story. Huawei phones with Kirin chipsets do okay (thanks to its domestic market). Samsung's Exynos phones used to be quite good too, but haven't regained that mainstream success in recent years.
Assuming this in-house chipset is real, could it perform well enough to rival its Qualcomm or MediaTek counterpart? We'll have to wait for an official announcement to find out. Until then, stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
