Xiaomi and Leica did the unthinkable - putting a camera lens on a smartphone

That's right, it's a freaking camera lens attached to a smartphone there. A full-blown video released online in China, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is a concept device that Xiaomi and Leica have been working on for quite some time. There are no official announcements yet, but here's what we know so far.

According to the video, the concept phone's hidden feature is the rear camera bump that allows the attachment of a camera lens. Inside the concept phone, there lies a full 1-inch sensor with professional lenses that would allow mobile photographers to take pictures with better image quality without relying much on digital bokeh or software camera tricks.

Unlike previous phone lens accessories, the secondary 1-inch sensor can receive light directly from the external lens instead of the original lens of the phone. The secondary sensor also reduces light loss and enables users to capture the sharpest image possible. To support the weight of the camera lens, the rear camera bump structure area got reinforced.

As for the rear camera lens itself, it is protected by sapphire glass and can be customized with Leica M series lenses. The decision to use that series makes sense, as it is known for being light and compact. Attaching the camera lens is the same as putting one on a DSLR, and the smartphone will provide the camera tools for the user such as shooting in 10bit RAW format.

This is definitely a fascinating concept but what do you think? Let us know in the comments below and do stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
