It looks like the trend of making your own custom chipset is going to get bigger. After Apple released the M1 chip, many have praised the performance it brings to the new MacBooks. The success might have inspired a few others to give in-house SoC a try as well. Besides Google's rumoured in-house "Whitechapel" SoC for the upcoming Pixel 6 series, Xiaomi and Samsung are said to be teaming up to develop one that utilizes ARM's Cortex X2 and Mali GPU.

It is worth noting that the ARM Cortex X2 has yet to be announced and will only be arriving later this year. Other than Xiaomi and Samsung, Qualcomm is expected to use the new architecture for its upcoming flagship SoCs as well. The source also claims that Xiaomi will continue to use ARM Mali GPUs over the Samsung and AMD’s combined offerings due to limited units. Therefore, it looks like Samsung might be keeping the AMD collaboration to itself rather than sharing it with others.

Other than the information above, not much regarding the project has been shared at the moment. It is said that Xiaomi has recently shown huge interest in making custom SoCs. Earlier, the Chinese company was spotted sourcing chips from MediaTek for future smartphones.
