Google has officially rolled out video generation features to its Gemini platform thanks to the Veo 2 model, so you can create AI-generated videos directly from text prompts. This update is now live for users subscribed to Gemini Advanced and Google One AI Premium (which starts from RM97.99), including those in Malaysia.

With this release, users can generate 720p video clips of up to 8 seconds long using simple prompts. The Veo 2 model is trained to produce smoother human movement and more accurate environmental physics.

This update also introduces Animate for Whisk, which is a tool designed to create images by mixing together elements you've typed in. Once it's done you can then tap the Animate button to turn your still images into short video clips. Both tools are accessible via gemini.google.com, and are part of Google Labs for the eligible users mentioned above.

Here are the key features of Veo 2 video generation:

  • Supports up to 8-second video generation
  • Outputs in 720p MP4 format
  • Powered by the Veo 2 AI model
  • Realistic human motion and natural physics
  • Built-in SynthID watermark for AI attribution
  • Monthly generation limits (with user notifications)
  • Direct sharing to platforms like TikTok and YouTube
  • Available via web and mobile

Granted, the resulting short videos are only up to 8 seconds long, but it means that anyone can pick it up for under RM100 per month and make their own movies. While Vertex AI remains Google's text-to-video generator for larger scale developers (along with Lyria and Chirp), we're really looking forward to what the really creative content creators can do with Veo 2.
