Spotify has introduced genre-based controls to its Discover Weekly playlist, allowing Premium users to customise their weekly recommendations.

This new feature, which is rolling out now, adds a layer of user input to one of the platform’s most iconic algorithmic playlists—without any additional cost.

What's new?

Launched on 30 June 2025, the update adds up to five genre buttons at the top of the Discover Weekly playlist. These buttons allow Premium subscribers to tailor their 30-track selection based on specific music styles such as Pop, R&B, Funk, and Rock.

The rollout coincides with Discover Weekly’s 10-year anniversary and over 100 billion total streams globally.

How it works

The genre filters are dynamically generated based on the listener’s historical preferences and are unique to each user. Tapping a genre reconfigures the playlist to highlight songs that fall under that specific category.

This updated version of Discover Weekly is being released through the "Made for You" section within the Spotify app. An app update may be required, and the feature is currently exclusive to Spotify Premium users.

Spotify also revealed that 77 percent of streams from Discover Weekly originate from emerging or lesser-known artists. The playlist has contributed to the discovery of over 56 million new musicians globally, highlighting its importance in music promotion.

Why now?

Spotify's decision to give listeners more control over an algorithm-driven playlist reflects a wider trend toward interactive personalisation.

While Discover Weekly has long relied solely on data-driven suggestions, the addition of genre filters bridges the gap between automation and user choice.

For users in Malaysia, this means easier access to genre-specific content without the need to search manually or create new playlists.

Whether you prefer local indie, K-pop, or lo-fi beats, you now have a faster way to guide the algorithm toward what matters most to you.

This update also aligns with Spotify’s broader efforts to personalise user experience. Other recent features include an AI DJ, a text-to-playlist tool, and a snooze button for playlist items—all of which support more user-directed interaction.
