Heads up. If you use either Google Mail, Yahoo Mail or Hotmail (or even all of them) as your main mail service, you might want to change the account access password pronto, as a total of 97 million account details from the three services has fallen to the hands of unscrupulous individuals online.
Breaking down the distribution of accounts, Yahoo Mail credentials accounts for 40 million, or 15 percent of the total; Hotmail accounts for 33 million, or 12 percent; and Gmail accounts for 24 million, or 9 percent. The rest of the affected accounts were tied to Mail.ru, which is Russia’s most popular email service. The total number of compromised accounts sits at 270 million different individual accounts.
The report states that the hack started more than 10 days ago, so it is not sure what details have been leeched out, and how extensive the hack is. Experts online are suggesting users to both change their passwords, and activate two-stage authentication for better protection against future attacks on email accounts.
