WhatsApp has discovered a rare software bug that can be exploited to activate malware on Windows computers. The bug, tagged as CVE-2025-30401, affects versions of WhatsApp for Windows that display previews of images or documents in chats. So, what should you know about it?

For your information, there is a vulnerability that could allow the sent file to be automatically executed when the user opens it. WhatsApp explains, "maliciously crafted files can cause recipients to unknowingly run malicious code." It is also described as a “ spoofing ” issue, where files appear to be safe but are actually executable programs.

This issue affects WhatsApp version 2.2450.6 and below. Meta (the parent company of WhatsApp) received information about this bug through its bug bounty program from a security researcher. This bug was fixed before it could be exploited by hackers. So, if you have the WhatsApp application installed on your Windows PC, we would recommend updating it to the latest version.
