After being broadcast on TV channels for a long time, the Oscars will be streamed exclusively on YouTube starting in 2029. So, what should you know about it?
An effort to digitalise the award
For your information, YouTube and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences signed an agreement to show the Oscars globally, exclusively starting from 2029 until 2033. The broadcasting rights have been held by ABC, and viewers in Malaysia can only follow it via paid satellite channels.
In addition to the Oscars broadcast rights, YouTube will also publish red carpet events, behind-the-scenes content, and Google Arts & Culture will receive access to the Academy Museum's collection. This effort will also help the Academy Museum digitise its collection for future generations to view.
To date, Tan Sir Michelle Yeoh was the first and only Malaysian to win the award in the Best Actress category in 2023. Who knows? We might see another Malaysian wins it in the future.
