YouTube has started blocking third-party mobile browsers from using 'clusters' for its background playback feature. That said, what should you know about it?
It is only available for YouTube Premium users
According to a report by Android Authority, Google announced that this feature can now only be used by YouTube Premium subscribers through the official iOS or Android app.
Background playback is a feature designed exclusively for YouTube Premium members. While some non-Premium users may have previously been able to access it via mobile web browsers in certain situations, we have updated this experience to ensure consistency across all of our platforms," a Google spokesperson said.”
Previously, many users used browsers like Brave, Vivaldi, Edge and several other browsers to maintain the use of these features without a subscription. With the latest update, that method should no longer work.
However, there are still other ways for some users. It is understood that some Firefox users have managed to change their browser settings to retain this feature. In fact, Brave has also updated its browser to bypass Google's latest restrictions, which seems to work for now for picture-in-picture and background playback.
It is unknown whether YouTube will completely close this shortcut in the future. For users who want to continue playing songs or videos in the background without interruption, the official way is through a YouTube Premium subscription.
