YouTube introduces handles, a new way to identify channels on the platform

All YouTube users will soon be getting a new way of identifying themselves, which may be new to the platform, but not something entirely foreign in the social media landscape. Announced via a blog post today, YouTube is introducing @name handles across the platform.

Every YouTube user will have a unique handle on the platform soon from channel pages to Shorts. The handles can be used to mention other users in the comments, video descriptions, titles and more. The Google-owned video platform said that the introduction of handles will make it easier for creators to reach audiences and increase visibility.

YouTube also clarified that creators will still have a channel name on the platform, but handles will be something unique and can potentially cut on impersonator accounts. The feature will be rolled out gradually starting this week and users will be notified when it’s their turn to pick a handle.

Hence, some people may claim your favourite handle before you but hey, we can’t all get our way, right? Moreover, if a user has already created a personalised URL for their channel, that will be their default handle though they will still have the option to change it once it’s their turn to pick a handle.
