According to The Verge, YouTube announced today that it will gradually start upscaling older videos to HD using artificial intelligence (AI). That said, what should you know about it?
The UI will be similar to Netflix
For your information, videos with resolutions below 1080p will be upscaled first, with a plan to then upscale to 4K. Videos that are upscaled using AI will be labelled as “Super Resolution” in the resolution options menu.
Moreover, video owners will be given the option not to allow YouTube to upscale their videos. Original videos at lower resolutions will also still be viewable. With YouTube usage increasing on TVs, the YouTube app interface will be updated to be more user-friendly on the big screen.
Additionally, the top will have a moving video with a moving carousel showing other content that can be watched. The YouTube interface on TV is similar to other streaming platforms, especially Netflix.
Finally, the thumbnail file size for videos has now been increased to 50MB from 2MB so that sharp, up to 4K thumbnails can be displayed when content is accessed using the TV app.
