YouTube says the skip ads button is here to stay

Yesterday, we reported that YouTube could be finding more ways to make you watch more advertisements. We are talking about the missing skip button that was spotted by several users, but YouTube recently denied removing it.

The Verge reached out to YouTube yesterday and YouTube spokesperson Oluwa Falodun replied that the skip button is not going anywhere. The reason why some users are seeing the black rectangle floating around is because the team is just "changing some elements of how ads are displayed".

In regards to the display changes, Falodun added that YouTube is “reducing elements on the ads player”. This is so that we can "engage more deeply with the ad through a cleaner experience". So we guess it was just some technical error that appeared for some users, as it was just a testing phase at the time.

We are glad that the skip button is here to stay but if you want to avoid watching ads on YouTube, the best (and legal) way is to subscribe to YouTube Premium. There are three plans for it - the Student, Individual and Family packages at the price of RM12.90, RM20.90 and RM40.90 per month, respectively.
