YouTube tightens guidelines on firearm contents

YouTube has updated its guidelines regarding content containing firearms today. The first change is that content containing firearms will be limited to users aged 18 years and over only. That said, what should you know about it?

For content creators too, tutorials for customizing firearms that violate the law are also now prohibited. An example is how to change a semi-automatic weapon to a fully automatic one. Tutorials on installing accessories that violate the law are also now prohibited, such as making sound-dampening devices using items at home.

Channels that violate these guidelines will be given a warning and the video will be removed. If the same error recurs within 90 days of the warning being issued, the channel will be given one strike. If the strike is not received the channel will continue to be blacked out by YouTube.

This change in YouTube guidelines comes about a month after Meta, Activision and a weapons manufacturer were sued by the parents of a shooting incident at a Uvalde Texas school. Meta was charged with not putting up obstacles to advertising weapons on Instagram. Meanwhile, gun companies were also sued for advertising their products to underage users on Meta. Activision was also accused of marketing weapons to underage players through the Call of Duty series.
