If you frequently watch YouTube videos on your desktop computer, then the annoying overlay ads covering a small portion of the video should be familiar to you. Well, even the Google-owned video platform agrees that the overlay ads are intrusive and has announced that it will be removing them beginning next month.

Specifically, the overlay ads will be removed on 6 April 2023, as per an official post on the YouTube Help Forum website. The post also confirmed that the decision was made to help improve the viewer experience and shift engagement to higher-performing ad formats on both desktop and mobile.

Moreover, YouTube asserted that overlay ads are a legacy ad format that is only served on desktops and are disruptive for viewers. Besides that, the company also assured creators that the removal of overlay ads would have a limited impact as engagement shifts to other ad formats.
