Your next McDonald’s Drive-Thru order could be with a voice-based AI

McDonald’s recently acquired Apprente, a startup that makes voice-based AI (Artificial Intelligence) conversational systems, perhaps so that an AI would be able to take your order the next time you go through their Drive-Thru. Currently, McDonald’s Drive-Thrus are done via real live people taking your order, but it seems completely possible if we already have Facebook Chat bots in operation.

Apprente already had a working demo back in 2018 but there’s no exact Malaysia release dates on when we might see AI taking orders at McDonald’s Drive-Thrus. There’s also no mention if it would be able to handle customized orders like my Double cheeseburger with no onions and pickles but the AI is expected to do some upselling, perhaps suggesting a sundae cone because the weather is hot or something like that.

If it does get implemented soon, McDonald’s have already got a restaurant run by robots which could eliminate human error completely. It also means you might have to have a certificate in robotics or AI if you want to work at McDonald’s in the future too, but what do you think? Would you be ok with a McDonald’s restaurant run completely by AI and robots? Let us know on our Facebook page and stay tuned to TechNave.com.
