Remember the proposed air taxi service in Malaysia by airasia? Well, it looks like the company has made further strides towards making it a reality after its AirAsia Air Mobility (AAM) unit signed a letter of intent (LoI) to explore its infrastructure development with Skyports Infrastructure.

As reported by national news agency Bernama, the partnership will help establish a fully operational vertiport network and develop a practical network of vertiports in our country. In a joint statement by both companies today, they announced the implementation of joint feasibility studies to integrate air taxi vertiport infrastructure, identify potential vertiport sites and develop operational requirements and frameworks to implement a vertiport network.

Furthermore, the statement elaborated that the partnership will draw on airasia’s aviation expertise and experience, as well as its on-ground market knowledge and networks. As for Skyports, it will bring its portfolio of designing and building take-off and landing infrastructure for eVTOL passenger aircraft to the partnership.

Besides that, the partnership will also accelerate a review of the infrastructure, including vertical take-off and landing platforms, and strengthen the group’s potential as a zero-emissions ultra-short-haul air travel provider in Southeast Asia. Previously, airasia had revealed its plans to lease 100 Vertical Aerospace VX4 eVTOL aircraft from Avolon, its drone training programme over the past year, and extended drone-related training to high-technology-related sectors recently.
