At the recent 2025 Proton Tech Showcase 2025, national automaker Proton previewed the eMAS 7’s first plug-in hybrid variant, dubbed eMAS 7 PHEV. Market expectations suggest the SUV could launch at a price starting around RM130000 to RM140000, positioning it roughly RM20–30k above the existing SUV in Proton’s lineup, the Proton X50.

Although none of the pricing or variant details are officially confirmed yet, Proton has already begun gathering feedback via owner surveys, a sign that the eMAS 7 PHEV is close to production readiness.

What Powers the eMAS 7 PHEV

Under the hood, the eMAS 7 PHEV adopts a hybrid setup based on the same global architecture as its BEV sibling, using a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and an 18.4 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery.

Depending on configuration (based on the overseas equivalent), the combined output is expected to deliver around 218 hp and 320 Nm of torque, powering the SUV from 0–100 km/h in approximately 8 seconds, with a claimed top speed near 170 km/h. When fully charged and supplied with fuel, the eMAS 7 PHEV is likely to offer a total driving range of around 943 km, with a pure-electric range of up to 83 km under WLTP-type cycles.

Design and Visual Identity

Visually, the eMAS 7 PHEV inherits much of the styling from the regular eMAS 7, though some details set it apart: the head- and tail-light bars are full-width LED strips; the pop-out flush door handles of the BEV are replaced by conventional handles; and there are modifications to the bumpers and tailgate. The preview prototype displayed at the Tech Showcase included Proton badging on the grille, 19-inch wheel centre caps, and tinted windows, a hint that the vehicle is nearing a production-ready stage.

A Hybrid Alternative in Malaysia’s Electrified SUV Lineup

The introduction of the eMAS 7 PHEV gives Proton a hybrid option in a market where fully electric vehicles (EVs) can still face infrastructure and range-anxiety challenges. The hybrid powertrain offers a middle ground: a long total driving range, a meaningful EV-only mode for daily commute, and the flexibility of a conventional internal-combustion engine when needed.

If priced at the expected RM130k–RM140k range, this could make the PHEV a compelling value proposition, offering many of the benefits of EV or hybrid ownership without the typical price premium associated with imported electrified vehicles.

What’s Next?

At this stage, Proton has confirmed the eMAS 7 PHEV will headline the Tech Showcase and has displayed a near-production prototype. Full specifications, trim levels and final pricing remain unconfirmed, and we expect Proton to announce them officially closer to the vehicle’s market release, likely in early 2026, if all goes according to schedule.
