We’re just a few days away from the official release of iOS 16 and it looks like Apple is adding yet another new feature to the iPhone OS. Spotted inside the iOS 16 RC to developers yesterday (7 September 2022), the system can now detect counterfeit AirPods and accordingly, warn users when they try to connect them to their iPhones.

As reported by 9to5Mac, the code is found in internal system files of the latest RC version of iOS 16. It is likely that a slightly tweaked version of this will end up being the final official version of iOS 16 which is set to be released this 12 September 2022.

If an iPhone running iOS 16 detects that a counterfeit AirPods is trying to pair to the device, a warning will pop up saying, “These headphones could not be verified as genuine AirPods and may not behave as expected” as well as an option to not connect. Moreover, there’s also a “Learn More” button beside the message which will direct users to a support article on the official Apple website.

Of course, this warning will only affect counterfeit AirPods that try to spoof Apple’s official protocols and not third-party headphones or TWS. Besides that, there are also no signs of Apple actually blocking users from pairing these counterfeit AirPods but instead only warning them.
