Following the release of the realme 9 Pro last month, realme yesterday unveiled another variant of the realme 9 series, this time the 9 5G SE. Short for ‘Speed Edition’, the new phones are actually faster than its Pro cousin as it features a Snapdragon 778G, a step up from the 9 Pro’s Snapdragon 695 5G.

However, compared to the 9 Pro, the 9 5G SE has an inferior camera setup that includes a 48MP primary + 20MP depth-sensing + 2MP macro at its rear and a 16MP front facing camera. Furthermore, the camera setup is only capable of recording at a maximum of 4k30 fps.

The display is also quite impressive for its price range, whereby it sports a 6.6-inch IPS display that can switch between six refresh rates, from as low as 30Hz all the way up to 144Hz. The screen also has a 240Hz touch sampling rate, a 1080 x 2412 resolution with a 20:9 aspect ratio and can go up to 600 nits peak brightness.

The 9 SE is also promising an extensive battery life thanks to its 5000mAh battery that supports 30W charging. realme claims that the device can last up to 19.5 hours of video playback and unlike other smartphone manufacturers out there, a charger that supports the maximum charge rate will be included inside the box.

Completing the specs list are either a 6 or 8GB of LPDDR4x dual channel RAM, a 128GB UFS 2.2 storage and realme UI 2.0 OS that is based on Android 11. There is also triple card slot for two nano SIM cards and a microSD.

realme will make the 9 5G SE available for purchase in India starting from 14 March 2022 and has not revealed any plans to expand its availability in other regions as of yet. It comes in two colours, Starry Glow or Azure Glow and are sold in two different configurations. The 6/128GB variant is sold at ~RM1099 and the 8/128GB variant at ~RM1263.

realme claims that this is the first smartphone within its range that not only offers a Snapdragon 778G, but also a 144Hz display. Definitely one of the most value-for-money smartphone options out there if you ask me.
