A phone that manages to squeeze a full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard into a compact package

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Mini Pro manages to squeeze a full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard into a ridiculously compact package. A successor to the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini Pro, the XPERIA Mini Pro offers a number of benefits over its predecessor.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro: Display

The original XPERIA X10 Mini Pro was a tiny and chubby Android smartphone that had a smart UI, a rich features list and an excellent keyboard, but it wasn't without its limitations. Sony Ericsson has upped the ante with its successor, starting with the display — in addition to boasting a larger screen (3in compared to 2.5in), the new XPERIA Mini Pro has a better resolution of 320x480 (compared to its predecessor's 240x320 resolution), and uses a "Reality display" combined with what Sony Ericsson calls its BRAVIA Mobile Engine. The latter promises image noise reduction, along with sharpness, colour and contrast enhancements when viewing images and video.

RIM used its 2011 BlackBerry World even in Orlando to unveil its latest CDMA phone, the fast and powerful Bold 9930. Thin and light, the new Bold will run the new BlackBerry 7 operating system, showcasing new social features and new hardware.

The phone is an impressive 11mm thick and comes with the same keyboard as others in the Curve range, meaning more lozenge keys that sit separate from one another. The phone still has the same optical trackpad as all the others in the range.

The side of the phone has a helpful little camera button, which we’re always pleased to see – it might not be much used as the trackpad is best for landscape shots, but it’s an easy way to fire up the camera.

That's not to say that the Fuji JX370 isn't capable, however. With a 5x optical zoom lens, the JX370 provides adequate zoom range for most shooters. The JX370's 28mm-equivalent wide angle should be enough even for indoor shooting, when you often can't simply take a few more steps back from your subject to fit everything within the frame. On the other end of the range, the 140mm-equivalent telephoto lets you more tightly frame your subject, helping make them the center of attention. The Torch 9850 (launching in the US as a CDMA model known as the 9860) is a pure touchscreen device with a 3.7in (480x800-pixel) screen – the largest on a BlackBerry device to date. The 253dpi display, 5Mp camera and 720p video camera are powered by a 1.2GHz processor and 768MB of RAM. Primed with 4GB of internal memory, the Torch 9850’s memory will be expandable by up to 32GB via a microSD card. The handset has Wi-Fi and HSPA+ connectivity and runs BB7 – the brand-new version of the BlackBerry smartphone OS. It also comes with a digital compass, Bluetooth and GPRS connectivity.
