The Sharp Mebius Pad was recently announced at CEATEC in Japan and is the first Windows 8 tablet from the company. Featuring a 10.1-inch Sharp IGZO panel with tech specs like 2560 x 1600 resolution and an Intel Atom Z3370 processor, the tablet is currently undergoing dust-proof and water-proof certification and is expected to get IPX5, IPX7 and IP5X certification. The ultra thin and super energy efficient IGZO panel ensures longer battery life and results in a fairly slim tablet. Unfortunately it is expected to launch in Japan in early 2014, with Malaysia release dates and pricing probably after that date. The upcoming HTC Butterfly 2 recently had it's front panels leaked in a number pictures from China-based Weiphone. Now, they've already leaked a number of other smartphone parts so for the most part, the information seems accurate. The HTC Butterfly 2 will supposedly have impressive tech specs such as a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 5.2-inch 1080p display, UltraPixel camera and BoomSound dual front facing speakers. Taking design cues from the HTC 8XT which is a Windows Phone, the Butterfly 2 looks to disguise it's bottom speaker in the form of a black bar between the Android soft keys with a two-tone colour scheme. So far there looks to be black + white and black + black and black + blue. Other features include a possible IPX7 waterproof certification, but there doesn't seem to be any news on Malaysia release dates or pricing just yet. However, the HTC Butterfly 2 is expected to arrive in January 2014.

Every day another smartwatch prototype comes up, especially from crowd-funding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. After the Pebble smartwatch started it, we've seen quite a few other Bluetooth connected smartwatches, but only a few which can stand on their own without having to rely on accompanying smartphones. The A.I. Watch is one of them as it allows you to make and accept calls, is powered by Android, is water-proof and has a functional 5MP camera. Since you can insert a SIM card, the A. I. Watch is practically a smartphone with tech specs that include a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 1.54-inch (240 x 240) touchscreen, 500 mAh battery, 4GB of storage, WiFi, GPS and Android 4.0.4. Unfortunately, it is still in prototype stage, and needs $100000 on an Indiegogo campaign to reach mass production. If it does become successful, each watch could cost $279 (RM909) but if it manages to break it's goal, the makers are promising other stuff like 1GB of RAM (for $500000) or a bigger battery. No exact Malaysia release dates but as of the time of writing, the watch has another 41 days before it has to reach it's pledged goal of $100000. Check out the video in the article.

When the Acer Iconia W3 tablet first came out, this 8.1-inch tablet was the first Windows 8 based tablet to be smaller than 10.1-inches. Unfortunately, it had a number of issues, including a non-IPS screen. A video showcasing a similarly shaped Acer tablet but with an IPS screen has recently appeared though, and could be called the Acer Iconia W4 820. Other tech specs and features include a new 1.33 GHz Intel Atom Z3740 processor, which from the video looks to have no lag at all. Other tech specs like 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage remains the same but the tablet does have a 5MP rear camera and 2MP front camera as well. The IPS LCD display looks to be 1200 x 800 pixels and may be priced from EUR329 (RM1447) perhaps because of the better hardware. So far, no Malaysia release dates are available but we expect it to arrive soon.

We previously reported about the Project F series of premium smartphones from Samsung which may have a metal body, 16MP OIS cameras and other superior tech specs or features but now it appears that it may be called theSamsung Galaxy F series instead. While there is already the Samsung Galaxy S series, the new Samsung Galaxy F series will spare no expense in making a super premium lineup of smartphones with top-of-the-line features such as Samsung Octa-core Exynos processors and the aforementioned metal chassis. No news on Malaysia pricing or release dates but this Samsung Galaxy F series is expected to be priced higher than the Samsung Galaxy Note series. This strategy fits with Samsung's usual 'carpet bombing' of a model for every need and we may see the first Samsung Galaxy F smartphone during the holiday season at the end of 2013.

Samsung have confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch will soon be compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III smartphones. The news comes courtesy of Lee Young-hee, Executive Vice President for Marketing of Samsung who stated that the S4 would be compatible by end of October 2013. The Note II and Galaxy S III on the other hand will be compatible by end of December. This compatibility hinges on the smartphones getting their Android 4.3 updates which will then enable the Bluetooth 4.0 LE support required by the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch to work. As mentioned earlier, the Samsung Galaxy Gear has an RRP of RM999 in Malaysia although it can be acquired for free as a combo deal with certain local telcos. In related news, Samsung will be working on apps or a user experience to make the Gear smartwatch pop more as they acknowledge that the smartwatch "lacks something special".

Rehashing an old concept with new tech, Toshiba is coming out with dual camera modules which may soon offer smartphones the Lytro-like ability to refocus after the shot while maintaining sharp image clarity. The dual camera module uses two 5MP cameras that records both depth and image information at the same time, creating a 'deep focus' effect and a resulting 13MP image. The camera module works a lot like the Pelican Imaging camera array but unfortunately Toshiba have said that they expect it to reach mass production by April 2014, so we may only see smartphones with these Toshiba dual camera modules after that date. No exact Malaysia release dates or pricing just yet, but it could mean that next year's smartphones will have the same capabilities as the current batch of photo-binning cameraphones, like the Nokia Lumia 1020.
