Ever since U Mobile was nominated as the second 5G network provider in Malaysia, the news caught many Malaysians by surprise, particularly other well-known local telcos. But in order to proceed, the orange telco's foreign shareholders must reduce its ownership.

In Opensignal's latest Malaysia Mobile Network Experience Report, we have noticed some interesting insights. Long story short, this year's results show a big jump in download speeds by Malaysians thanks to 5G rollouts.

Previously, we reported that U Mobile will reduce the number of foreign shareholders after being chosen to develop Malaysia’s second 5G network. Accordingly, U Mobile today announced that Straits Mobile Investment Pte Ltd, a wholly owned unit of Singapore-based ST Telemedia has reduced its ownership in the company.

As you should know by now, U Mobile was chosen as the second 5G network provider in Malaysia. To be honest, we were quite surprised. The same applies to CelcomDigi and Maxis. The latter even asked for an explanation, which MCMC responded to.

It has been long overdue in choosing a second 5G network provider but here we are. Just before the end of Friday last week, the Malaysian government selected U Mobile as Malaysia's second 5G network provider. Below is the official statement provided by U Mobile.

Today, U Mobile has announced its first family postpaid plan, U Family 128. Priced at RM128 per month, this latest plan includes 1000GB of shareable 5G data and 15GB of shareable free global roaming data at 63 destinations for up to four lines.

CelcomDigi, in a statement today, said that it is “considering several options at hand” after it was snubbed for U Mobile in the awarding of Malaysia’s second 5G network. However, CelcomDigi assures that the decision will have no impact on its current 5G customers.

Today, U Mobile thanked the Malaysian government for being chosen to develop Malaysia's Second 5G Network. For this purpose, U Mobile also stated that it will work with a number of parties to make this matter a success, including SKMM and telecommunications companies such as CelcomDigi and Telekom Malaysia, in offering 5G-Advanced networks to customers.
