News & Reviews: ASUS ZenFone 5
Apr 08, 2014
After we managed to get an early engineering sample of the ASUS ZenFone 5 we got some sample pics using the 8MP rear camera. While it had some issues with the LED flash due to still being an engineering sample, we found the camera itself to be very fast and accurate. Once we get our hands on a bug-free retail version we're quite interested to see what the ASUS ZenFone 5 can really do, especially with the company's PixelMaster technology in play. For now, check out the pictures in this article.

The ASUS ZenFone range of smartphones will be getting a regional launch very soon, but we managed to get our hands on what appears to be an engineering sample of the ASUS ZenFone 5 for a quick hands-on preview. Going for a slim but rounded back look, the ZenFone 5 feels both light and solidly built at the same time. Thanks to the curved backside, the ZenFone 5 fits nicely into the palm of your hand while the smartphone is thin enough to look both sleek and stylish. Thankfully, there isn't any protruding camera lens this time around while the back is matte, and doesn't attract fingerprints or smudges all that much.

The Red Dot Design Award highlights great design combining innovation, functionality, egonomics and quality amongst others, so it comes as no surprise that ASUS recently won it for their new ZenFone range of smartphones. The ASUS ZenFone range of smartphones consists of the ASUS ZenFone 4, ASUS ZenFone 5 and ASUS ZenFone 6, with all of them utilizing the same ergonomic design and solid build quality. The screens are well-protected with Corning's Gorilla Glass 4 while the ASUS ZenUI brings Android 4.3 based energy efficiency together with smooth working functionality. We're all set for the upcoming regional release of the ASUS ZenFone series in the middle of April 2014 so stay posted for more details on the ASUS ZenFone range of smartphones.

We've been looking forward to the ASUS ZenFone 4, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 6 for quite some time, but it appears that China may get the new range of smartphones before we do. The Intel Atom powered smartphones will apparently be available in China on 11 April 2014, as announced by ASUS on Weibo. The ASUS ZenFones will be running the new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean based ZenFone UI with an Android 4.4 KitKat update expected later in the year. Confirming earlier reports that the ASUS ZenFone range of smartphones would be priced below RM1K, the pricing in China is expected to go for $100 (RM329) for the ASUS ZenFone 4, $150 (RM494) for the ASUS ZenFone 5 and $200 (RM659) for the ASUS ZenFone 6. The recently announced ASUS ZenFone smartphones offer some really interesting features with the ZenFone UI being one of them, but what many Malaysians are most interested in is the price and when or if the ZenFone 4, 5 and 6 will arrive in Malaysia. Recently, we heard some news that the ASUS ZenFone range could be coming to Malaysia in April 2014 direct from ASUS Malaysia. Furthermore, we received an anonymous tip that the ASUS ZenFone 4 could be priced from RM250 while the ASUS ZenFone 5 could get a price range of around RM450 to RM700. The larger ASUS ZenFone 6 phablet could go for around RM700 to RM900 with the overall pricing expected to be below RM1K. US pricing for the ZenFone range was $99 (RM324) for the ZenFone 4, $149 (RM487) for the ZenFone 5 and $199 (RM651) for the ZenFone 6. While you should take every rumour with a pinch of salt, we think this is a very exciting rumour nonetheless especially for fellow Malaysians looking for a good deal (and a good yet affordable smartphone). In the meantime check out the tech specs and video in this article for a refresher of the ASUS ZenFone 4, 5 and 6 smartphones.
