  • Apple iPad mini with Retina Display (iPad mini 2) review

Apple iPad mini with Retina Display (iPad mini 2) review

When Apple first came out with the Apple iPad mini we loved it's better design as the slimmer bezels and narrower look made it awesome to handle. However, while the 7.9-inch screen was still very good in itself, we wondered why Apple didn't put in a Retina Display like it had with the most recent version (at the time) of the Apple iPad. Turns out, they were waiting for the next generation Apple iPad mini 2 or as Apple wants to call it, the Apple iPad mini with Retina Display. The smaller Apple tablet that could is now a lot more capable as Apple have not only added on the expected (and much wanted) Retina Display, but have also included a very capable hardware upgrade. Read on to see our full review of the Apple iPad mini with Retina Display.

Apple iPad Air vs iPad mini with Retina Display

Apple has recently revealed the latest versions of their tablets, the Apple iPad Air (Apple iPad 5) and Apple iPad mini with Retina Display (Apple iPad mini 2). Offering new 64-bit A7 processors, improved design and tech specs and the aforementioned Retina Display for both tablets it now makes for an interesting choice of which Apple tablet to choose. We'll be covering this question in this comprehensive tech specs comparison between the Apple iPad Air and Apple iPad mini with Retina Display, so do read on.

  • Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display (iPad Mini 2) officially announced

Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display (iPad Mini 2) officially announced

The 2nd generation Apple iPad Mini also was recently announced but unlike the iPad Air, only gets the standard Apple name of Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display. Yep, finally, Apple has refreshed the iPad Mini with a Retina Display, fulfilling the demands of Apple iPad Mini tablet users around the world. But guess what, they've also added in a little surprise in the form of a brand new 64-bit Apple A7 processor with the M7 motion coprocessor. Again, no Touch ID fingerprint scanner under the Home button. Rather than talk about the thinner and lighter iPad Mini, Apple have instead chosen to talk about the obvious specs of the Retina Display. This is perhaps because the new iPad Mini with Retina Display is actually thicker at 7.5mm (the previous version was 7.2mm) and heavier at 331g (the previous version was 308g). This isn't so obvious when held in the hand, but if you line the two versions up together and look closely, you'll see the difference. Tech specs and features for the Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display include:

    • 64-bit A7 chip with M7 motion coprocessor
    • 16GB / 32GB / 64GB / 128GB storage
    • 7.9-inch Retina Display (2048 x 1536 pixels, 326 ppi pixel density, LED-backlit, IPS, Multi-touch, Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating)
    • 5MP rear camera (autofocus, face detection, backside illumination, f/2.4 aperture) + 1.2MP FaceTime front camera
    • Supports WiFi + Bluetooth + (4G LTE + GPS (Cellular version))
    • Supports dual microphones + dual antennas
    • 134.7 x 200 x 7.5mm | 331g / 341g (Celluar version)
    • 10 hour battery
    • Apple iOS 7

Apple announces iPad Air, iPad Mini 2 with Retina screen and more, catch event here

In a keynote event held just yesterday, Apple has revealed the latest versions of their iPad and iPad Mini tablets confirming many of the rumours and leaked images that surfaced before this official announcement. While many of the obvious rumours were confirmed such as the 5th generation Apple iPad tablet getting a redesign along with the Apple iPad Mini 2 getting a new Retina Display, there were some surprises revealed. First off, the 5th generation Apple iPad tablet will be called the Apple iPad Air and the iPad Mini 2 or Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display gets a much better processor than earlier thought. The keynote event also mentions a lot more which you can replay here (provided you have QuickTime and are watching it with Safari):

  • Apple event for 22 October confirmed, Apple iPads and more coming soon?

Apple event for 22 October confirmed, Apple iPads and more coming soon?

Apple has recently sent out invites for an event on 22 October 2013, confirming earlier reports of such an event. With an invite titled "We still have a lot to cover.", Apple are likely to reveal the Apple iPad 5iPad mini 2 and Apple TV along with new MacBook Pro models. So far, quite a lot of leaked images and rumours point towards a slimmer and thinner Apple iPad 5 that uses the same narrow bezel design as the Apple iPad mini, while the iPad mini 2 will likely offer a Retina screen. The tech specs and features for these tablets are also expected to change with Apple's 64-bit A7 chip and Touch ID fingerprint scanner expected to be put into the iPad 5 along with a 2K Retina display. Apart from the expected Retina display, the iPad mini 2 will also likely get a new processor in the form of the Apple A6 processor. While these seem like the most likely Apple products to be revealed, we could also see the Apple iWatch revealed so stay tuned and we'll keep you posted. No details on Malaysia release dates or pricing just yet though.

  • Rumours: Champagne gold iPad mini 2 with fingerprint scanner appears

Rumours: Champagne gold iPad mini 2 with fingerprint scanner appears

When the Apple iPhone 5S appeared with Space Grey and Gold it was assumed that other Apple products would also have these new colour options as well. Seemingly confirming these assumptions is a recently leaked image of the Apple iPad Mini 2 in champagne gold. Rather than just a backplate, this appears to be the full tablet as it also features a fingerprint scanner Home button on the front, much like the one found on the Apple iPhone 5S. The pics certainly seem accurate enough to not be fakes but with all rumours do take this with a pinch of salt. While there was no exact Malaysia release dates or pricing the Apple iPad Mini 2 is expected to be announced in the next few weeks or so.

Apple iPad 5 gets exact measurements, thinner and lighter

We've seen quite a few leaked pics and videos of the upcoming Apple iPad 5. Many of them confirm that it will look a lot like the Apple iPad mini but a recent video has surfaced showing off the exact measurements of the Apple iPad 5 compared to the previous generation Apple iPad 4. The most obvious tech spec differences is the width, thinness and weight as the Apple iPad 4 is 185.7mm wide and 9.4mm thick while the Apple iPad 5 is 169.5mm wide, 7.2mm thick and about 37% lighter. While there isn't any news on Malaysia release dates or pricing just yet, many are estimatng the Apple iPad 5 and Apple iPad mini 2 may arrive on 15 October 2013. For now, check out the video in the article.
