As most smartphone enthusiasts know, a Corning Gorilla Glass is mostly featured on premium devices but sometimes it would appear on mid to upper mid-range devices as well. Corning's Project Phire to offer sapphire crystal durability

Despite just coming out with their Corning Gorilla Glass 4, Corning have announced that they are developing a new protective glass layer with the capabilities of sapphire crystal. The new glass is called Project Phire and combines the shock and drop resistance of Gorilla Glass 4 with the scratch resistance of sapphire crystal. Personally, we've had no problems with scratches for our current Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protected devices but there are those who need a tougher alternative. Hopefully, Project Phire will result in some more affordable sapphire crystal quality glass and not just make another alternative material, but so far, Corning's track record has been quite good. No news when we might see it just yet but we expect it later this year after manufacturers start rolling out Gorilla Glass 4 devices.

"We told you last year that sapphire was great for scratch performance but didn't fare well when dropped. So, we created a product that offers the same superior damage resistance and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with scratch resistance that approaches sapphire."-James Clappin, Corning

Corning Gorilla Glass 4 officially announced, 2x more drop resistant

Corning has just announced their new Corning Gorilla Glass 4 for smartphones and mobile devices. This time around they've made it in such a way that it can withstand drops on stone up to 80% of the time. Scratch resistance has also been improved and according to Corning East Asia, the new Gorilla Glass 4 is more durable than sapphire crystal glass. They've already started shipping out Gorilla Glass 4 to smartphone makers worldwide, so we could see devices with Corning Gorilla Glass 4  within this year alone. No news on whether it is more expensive or Malaysia release dates but we expect it to feature on the next generation of smartphones coming soon.
