The move came amid mounting pressure on Apple to act, as the company faced criticism for continuing to host the app despite widespread misuse. According to reports, Apple ultimately chose to intervene behind the scenes rather than immediately enforce a ban.

On 11 August 2025, Elon Musk announced that Grok 4, developed by his company xAI, is now available for free to all users. However, the free tier includes a limited number of queries per day, while full access still requires a subscription.
