With the region’s ongoing threat of cross-border cybercrime, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and Royal Thai Police may join forces to establish a joint committee to tackle the issue. This was among the matters discussed during the 26th Thailand-Malaysia Working Committee Meeting on Criminal Activities in Shah Alam recently.

According to Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Mohd Kamaruddin Md. Din, the modus operandi of the syndicate is to hack social media accounts and then pose as the person that they hacked. He revealed that a total of 314 cases of online fraud involving more than RM2 million were recorded from January to March 2022 alone.
