In case you didn't receive it, a few of us have gotten an SMS from our respective telcos. Starting on 2 July 2023, SMS containing links, requesting personal data and phone numbers will be blocked to prevent online fraud. 

As you all know, scammers have different methods to con you into giving them money. One of these methods is including URLs in SMS, which can redirect you to websites that either steal your information or money. Well, Maxis has already confirmed when it will start blocking this.

The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) has instructed all telco companies in Malaysia to block any URL links in short message services (SMS). The directive, made through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was to ensure that no malicious URL is being spread that would possibly make people become victims of scams.

The Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD) has advised the public to be wary of a new scam that is being shared via SMS and messaging apps. The viral message alleges that RM900 will be credited to Bantuan Warganegara Malaysia (BWM) recipients via their Touch ’n Go eWallet, which is nothing but a front for a phishing website.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has today warned against fake text messages from ‘GOV’ that claims to be giving special finance assistance credited into Touch ’n Go eWallet accounts. The commission found that irresponsible parties had manipulated the ‘GOV’ digital identity for fraud purposes and even used the MySejahtera organisation name to deceive the public.

Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) has warned its consumers to be wary when making online transactions as scammers are now utilising new and sophisticated scam tactics to trick them. These include creating fake apps, phishing sites and creating scam ads on social media.

Starting from 3 December 2020, Maybank Malaysia will no longer send any SMS notifications to your smartphone. So whenever you make a Debit Card transaction, the notification will be sent to your Maybank2u (or M2U MY) app instead. 

It seems that a recent statement by ithome.com hinted that 5G messages could potentially replace SMSes in the future which could benefit everyone, due to the fact that 5G messages allow users to send more complex messages to one another. While not much is known in regards to when this feature will be available to everyone, we do know that certain Xiaomi smartphones have already received an update to use the aforementioned feature.

Maxis has officially announced that they will be permanently increasing the internet data for all Maxis postpaid plans by up to 300% without increasing the price of the plan. It is best to note that the upgrade will be rolled out from 4 June until 10 June 2020, while those who have received it will be notified via SMS.

In line with the Bantuan Prihatin Nasional (BPN) initiative, today will be the first phase which will last until 12 April 2020. With this, the Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri Malaysia (LHDN Malaysia) have taken the initiative to inform every Malaysian citizen about the official SMS messages they will receive during this week.
