We have written a few news about this before and it happened again. Just last Friday, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court fined an individual, Tiew Ai Teng, 38, RM20,000 or 2 months imprisonment for selling TV boxes pre-loaded with unauthorised Astro content under Section 43AA of the Copyright Act 1987.

To fight privacy, the Intellectual Property High Court in Kuala Lumpur declared that the sale, offer for sale, distribution and/or supply of TV Boxes or illicit streaming devices (“ISDs”) that can provide unauthorised access to copyrighted works, is considered as copyright infringement under the Copyright Act 1987. With that said, suppliers and sellers that provide TV boxes with illegal access to content protected by their copyright work owners are punishable by law.

Piracy has been a long issue for the movie industry and Malaysia is certainly one of the countries. According to Malaysia's Entertainment and Media Industry, the annual loss due to digital piracy is estimated at RM3 billion to the entertainment and media industry and RM500 million in taxes.

Content piracy isn't anything new, but it's not that often you hear of it being punished harshly. However, that's exactly what happened here. We're referring to a case of a Malaysian woman who was fined RM30000 recently for ownership of six illegal media boxes.

In this modern era, most Malaysians have a Long TV box at home, particularly Malaysian Chinese households. So just before Chinese New Year tomorrow, a company director has pleaded guilty in selling illegal Long TV boxes charged by the domestic trade ministry.
