Following some 2 years of negotiations, 4 mobile network operators (MNOs) have executed share subscription agreements (SSAs) for a total of 65 per cent equity stake in Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB). The four MNOs are YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (YES), Telekom Malaysia (TM), Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) and Celcom Axiata Bhd (Celcom).

Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Aziz has assured Malaysians that the decision by two Mobile Network Operators (MNO) to reject holding stakes in Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) doesn’t have a huge financial impact on the government. This is because there are several local and foreign banks that are ready to finance the 5G network implementation in Malaysia.

The news about Maxis and U Mobile backing out of taking up stakes in Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) for the 5G deal came out last night. Fast enough, U Mobile has made a statement today to clarify the situation and ensure its customers that 5G services will still get provided through the telco company. 

Earlier, we had heard the news that Maxis and U Mobile backed out of taking up stakes in Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) for the 5G rollout in Malaysia. Until now, DNB has confirmed that it's proceeding with the plan with the four remaining carriers without the two mentioned ones.

Today is the deadline day for the 5G service agreement in Malaysia and it seems that the 5G single-wholesale network under Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) may exclude Maxis and U Mobile. This is after both telco companies reportedly say no to taking up stakes in DNB, despite agreeing to the matter back in June 2022.

All telco companies that will be providing 5G services in Malaysia have started technical tests regarding their implementation. This is according to the Chief Operating Officer (CEO) of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Datuk Mohd Ali Hanafiah Mohd Yunus.

U Mobile earlier this month launched new U Postpaid plans that are “5G ready” with up to 1TB of mobile internet data in Malaysia. Now, it looks like the telco company is further closer to 5G enrolment as its official website now shows U Mobile’s upcoming 5G network coverage in our country.
