Yesterday, two individuals were arrested for selling TV boxes with unauthorised content. They were charged under Section 43AA of the Copyright (Amendment) Act 2022, which is the first case since the amendment took effect in March 2022.

Content piracy isn't anything new, but it's not that often you hear of it being punished harshly. However, that's exactly what happened here. We're referring to a case of a Malaysian woman who was fined RM30000 recently for ownership of six illegal media boxes.

In this modern era, most Malaysians have a Long TV box at home, particularly Malaysian Chinese households. So just before Chinese New Year tomorrow, a company director has pleaded guilty in selling illegal Long TV boxes charged by the domestic trade ministry.

If you own an Android TV box or you’re planning to get one, you might want to check out this news. Starting from now, Malaysian authorities will be blocking IP addresses of servers that host pirated copyright content. Therefore, if you’re using a TV box to stream illegal pirated content, you might not be able to do it anymore in the near future.

Aside from paid subscription service like Astro or Netflix, technology like Android TV boxes provides us with access to TV shows and movies we don't normally have. But the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has warned that these Android Boxes are misusing the SIRIM and MCMC labels.
