Samsung demos flame-proof flexible solid state battery

In line with their flexible displays, Samsung recently demoed their new flexible battery technology. Rather than create a bendable battery in the form of a cable Samsung are using a non-liquid electrolyte for their batteries which while being not a liquid still follows the shape of whatever object or case you put it into. This sort of battery in a pouch offers even more versatility as you can now have the battery in anything with some space. The other cool thing about it is that due to the nature of the material it cannot overheat and start a fire even under the most extreme conditions. No details on pricing or Malaysia release dates but we should see some models offering the new Samsung battery technology soon (or next year).

LG announces stacked/stepped, cable and curved batteries for smartphones and wearables

LG Chem, a branch of LG dealing in everything from batteries to bendable lights has announced new flexible battery designs. This includes curved batteries, a battery in the form of cable (which still works even after it has been tied into a knot) and stacked / stepped batteries (which consist of multiple batteries made to work as a single unit). The new battery designs will probably mean bigger batteries for smartphones and mobile devices that have curved backs like LG's own LG G2. These new battery designs could be perfect for various applications but mostly seem perfect for smartphones and other mobile devices which don't have the space for a standard rectangular battery. LG Chem has said that they will demo these battery technologies on 16 October 2013. No news on pricing or Malaysia release dates but we expect smartphone makers to take advantage of these new battery types very soon.

  • Apple Patents Flexible Batteries

    Apple Patents Flexible Batteries

Apple really makes all kinds of patents, but some just seem to fit with what they're doing at the time like this patent describing a design for flexible batteries. The patent itself was filed in December 2011 but it covers the design of a flexible battery pack which allows the battery to be shaped to fit a form factor of an electronic device. Apart from being perfectly suited for Apple's upcoming iWatch, the isolated cell design allows it to be more reliable in that in case one of the cells fail the other cells will not fail together. While it seems to fit with the iWatch, this flexible battery design could just as well be used in any of Apple's other devices.
