According to a written parliamentary reply by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and cited by the Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, U Mobile is required to secure 80% 5G population coverage in its first year of operation, This will increase to 95% by the third year under the company’s Detailed Business Plan (DBP) for Malaysia’s second 5G network.

A few hours ago, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil provided new insights into the progress of Malaysia’s second 5G network during a briefing with U Mobile. According to the minister, 5G deployment in Malaysia continues to accelerate, with operators now overlaying the new network infrastructure onto existing 4G infrastructure to achieve faster and more stable connection upgrades.

U Mobile has officially launched its next-generation 5G network—branded as ULTRA5G—marking a major milestone in Malaysia’s digital infrastructure evolution. Designed with professional use in mind, ULTRA5G promises ultra-reliable connectivity, enhanced indoor coverage, and enterprise-grade performance powered by the latest 5G Standalone (SA) architecture.

Today, U Mobile has once again made another strategic partnership, this time with Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), to accelerate the nationwide deployment of its 5G network. It will be a 10-year agreement, valued at RM2.4 billion, and was formalised today at a signing ceremony held at Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara.  

As U Mobile prepares to implement the second 5G network, the media got a chance to speak with Chairman Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun about the progress. Long story short, we can expect to see the rollout in the next 15 to 18 months.

Today, U Mobile has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CIMB Bank Berhad to extend financing support for its upcoming 5G network rollout. This MoU follows the recent appointment of U Mobile as the nation’s second 5G network provider.

As we slowly approach the end of 2024, there should be a few things that we are happy to accomplish this year. However, our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his disappointment on two things - the rollout of the second 5G network and the MyDigital ID initiative.

In case you missed it, U Mobile has been chosen as the second 5G network provider by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). It certainly got some reactions from the public and other telcos, particularly Maxis.

Today, U Mobile has established a new strategic partnership with TIME dotCom in anticipation of the accelerated deployment of U Mobile’s 5G network. Under the government’s dual network model, U Mobile will tap into Time's fibre network to prepare for its second 5G network rollout.

While Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has already achieved 80% coverage for 5G connectivity in Malaysia, a second 5G network is expected to roll out but there are still no signs of it. To refresh your memory, DNB will be overtaken by a private company after achieving its goal.
