Sony Xperia Z3 listing at TENAA reveals tech specs + higher water resistance?

The Sony Xperia Z3 just can't stop being leaked it seems as it has recently appeared at China's TENAA with some pictures and tech specs. It appears that early rumours about the same tech specs as the Sony Xperia Z2 appear to be true with the only major difference being a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor. Other tech specs include 3GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, microSD support, a 5.2-inch IPS LCD display with full HD 1080p resolution, 20.7MP rear camera and 2MP front camera. One other feature that could be different is the water resistant certification. The Xperia Z2 was certified with an IP58 certification which means that the device can be under 1.5m of water for 30 minutes. Recent teasers for the Sony IFA 2014 event reveal that it could be able to go as low as 2 meters, signifying that the Xperia Z3 will have a much higher water resistance certification. No Malaysia release dates or pricing yet but the Xperia Z3 is expected to be revealed soon at the upcoming IFA 2014.

  • Rumours: Sony Xperia Z3 taken apart?

Rumours: Sony Xperia Z3 taken apart?

While it is set to be officially announced on 3 September 2014 at the upcoming IFA 2014 event, the Sony Xperia Z3 has appeared in some newly leaked pictures, apparently of it being taken apart. The leaked pictures confirm that the design is the only feature that seems to have been changed as asides from the shiny metal power button, everything else is matte black. Tech specs and features don't appear to have changed much from the Sony Xperia Z2 as the Sony Xperia Z3 is said to be packing the same Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, 20.7MP camera and 5.2-inch display with full HD resolution. There doesn't seem to be anything else different asides from the 3100 mAh battery which is 100 mAh less than before. No news yet on Malaysia release dates or pricing but we should find out more in the next week.

  • Rumours: Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact + Sony Android Wear smartwatch leaked by accident?

Rumours: Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact + Sony Android Wear smartwatch leaked by accident?

Device manufacturers often reveal new products rather unintentionally, especially when they're trying to promote something else. This seems to have happened recently with the upcoming Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact and also a still unnamed Sony Android Wear smartwatch. Neither of them have been announced yet and we still don't know details about tech specs and features, but it appears that both will be water resistant enough to bring to the pool. While there are no exact Malaysia release dates, the upcoming IFA 2014 event could be a great place to introduce them so we expect both to appear in the next few weeks.

  • Is the Sony Xperia Z2a the Xperia Z2 compact?

Is the Sony Xperia Z2a the Xperia Z2 compact?

Tech specs for the Sony Xperia Z2a suggest that it could well be the Sony Xperia Z2 compact smartphone. While the Xperia Z2a has already been officially announced in Taiwan it has yet to reach Malaysia or the rest of the world. These tech specs include a Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, a 5-inch full HD display, 20.7MP rear camera amd support for 4G LTE. Running on Android 4.4 KitKat, the only differences are the slightly smaller screen size, plastic backside and slightly smaller battery. Everything else matches up with the Xperia Z2, including the same water and dust resistance. Set for Taiwan in July 2014, it should reach other markets like Malaysia soon after. • New Sony cameraphone sensor is curved like the human eye = 2x better light sensitivity

New Sony cameraphone sensor is curved like the human eye = 2x better light sensitivity

Previously, most camera sensors were flat with a number of lenses placed in front of it to focus light and capture images. Sony has recently designed a new curved camera sensor that looks a lot like the design of a human eye. This allows for a single flatter lens, simplifying the design and reducing the number of parts. Other benefits include 1.4 times better light sensitivty in the center and 2 times better light sensitivity at the edges. The sensors include a 43mm full frame version probably for stand-alone cameras and a smaller 11mm one with a size about the same as a 2/3" sensor on a standard cameraphone. Sony managed to achieve this by flexing the sensor then covers it with a ceramic coating. Thankfully, this is not just a patent as Sony already have around 100 of these sensors already produced. Unfortunately, there is still no specific Malaysia release date, but it does mean that the next Sony cameraphones could be a lot better than before.

  • Samsung Galaxy S5 goes for a 1 meter dive

Samsung Galaxy S5 goes for a 1 meter dive

While it wasn't the first water-proof smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S5 does carry one of the higher water-resistant certifications around. Featuring an IP67 certification this is higher than some Sony Xperia smartphones, which originally started the trend, however, the official certification states that it can survive for up to 30 minutes under water at a depth of 1 meter. Wanting to test this out, Mobile-Review have dunked the Samsung Galaxy S5 in a 1 meter deep aquarium for a little bit more than 10 minutes. During that time the smartphone not only maintained a connection with the Galaxy Gear smartwatch it was paired with, it also received calls with no visible problems. Coming out of the water it also seemed just fine, proving that yes, you can bring the Samsung Galaxy S5 to the pool next time. Like other water-resistant smartphones, the key here is to make sure that all the seals have been placed tightly and neatly as you can still brick a water-proof smartphone if you don't seal it properly. Check out the video for yourself.
