24GB RAM for Smartphones: Realistic or Overkill?

Growing up as a Malaysian, we are often led to believe that bigger is “more better”. Even for the smartphone RAM, we would want the biggest RAM, because more, is better, right?

With the launch of Red Magic 8s Pro later today, it becomes the first smartphone in the world to have 24GB RAM processing power. That is a really big number considering that most Android smartphones have 4-8GB RAM. That is not all, the Red Magic 8s Pro also comes with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset (or 8+ Gen 2?) with a core frequency of up to 3.36GHz.

That begs the question, do we really need that much RAM? Let us take a quick look. In 2023, the bare minimum for a smartphone to run Android 13 starts at 2GB RAM. The RAM is important for your smartphone as this is where your apps are loaded into when they are launched.

While the number might vary based on models and brands, most smartphone users would agree that 4GB RAM is the minimal required for daily use. However, for the best money value, you might want to invest in a smartphone with 8 GB RAM for better longevity and performance. To put it simply, if you have a lot of background apps running, then you would want to have more RAM for your smartphone.

In conclusion? 24GB RAM could be realistic if you are a heavy multitasker, but an overkill if you are just a casual user.
